Luton Town have completed the loan signing of winger Tudor Mendel from Ipswich Town until January. The deal brings the young attacker to Kenilworth Road to bolster Jack Wilshere's attacking options.

Mendel is a 20-year-old winger who joined Ipswich's academy from Belgian giants Anderlecht in 2024. He made his senior debut as a late substitute in a 3-1 Carabao Cup win against Leicester City last season. After impressing for the Under-21s during an impressive PL2 campaign, he signed a new two-year contract with Ipswich, which includes an option for a third year. His performances in pre-season caught the eye of Luton's management.

Manager Jack Wilshere was clear about the attributes that attracted Luton to the player. "We wanted to add more of a direct threat, with real pace," Wilshere said. "Tudor's a right winger, but he can play on the left as well." The Luton boss also highlighted Mendel's football intelligence and his left-footed technique, suggesting he is a versatile addition to the squad.

Wilshere has prior knowledge of Mendel from his own time in academy football. "I’ve known about Tudor from his time at Chelsea," Wilshere explained. "When you're in the academy world and a young player gets a move abroad, you're aware of things like that." The manager also noted the player's good education in the game and his clear drive to succeed, leaving the door open for the loan to be extended beyond January if he performs well.

Mendel revealed that Luton's interest began at the start of pre-season. He was in a transitional phase at Ipswich, on the borderline between the Under-21s and the first team, when the Tractor Boys' manager gave him a chance with the senior side. His interest in the move grew substantially after making his competitive debut. Speaking directly to Wilshere about the project at Luton solidified his decision.

"I'm very happy to be at Luton and looking ahead to the first game," Mendel stated. He expressed excitement about the team's attacking style and possession-based philosophy, believing he can make a significant contribution if he applies himself correctly. The move offers him a clear pathway to regular senior football, which was his primary aim.

Luton currently sit 13th in the League One table with four points from their first three matches, recording one win, one draw, and one loss. Their recent form reads LDW. The team has scored eight goals but conceded ten, giving them a goal difference of minus two. They are three points behind early leaders Blackpool. Mendel's pace and directness are intended to address the need for more attacking threat, a point highlighted by the current goal-conceded tally. Fans can track the team's progress on the standings page.

His arrival adds depth to the wide areas as Luton prepare for their next fixture, a home match against Leyton Orient on September 5th. Orient are currently 17th in the table. This game presents an immediate opportunity for Mendel to be involved. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page, and the updated squad list can be found on the squad page.

The loan deal for Tudor Mendel runs initially until the January transfer window.
