Luton Town have confirmed the departure of defender Thomas Holmes after mutually terminating his contract. The 26-year-old leaves the club on transfer deadline day.
Holmes joined Luton from Reading in January 2024 when the club was in the Premier League. His time at Kenilworth Road was disrupted by injury and loan spells, limiting him to a total of 22 appearances. The club confirmed the news this week, stating, "We can confirm that Luton Town Football Club has agreed with Thomas Holmes to mutually terminate the defender’s contract."
Thomas Holmes made his Luton debut in the Championship during a 3-0 victory over Watford in October. He scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Derby County. His spell also included a red card in a 3-2 defeat at Coventry City. After returning from an initial loan back to Reading, Holmes featured twice at the start of last season before a loan move to Rotherham United in September. He made nine appearances in total last term after returning from injury, but his loan was not extended for the second half of the campaign.
The mutual termination provides squad clarity as Luton Town focus on their League One campaign. Rob Edwards's side currently sits 14th in the table with four points from three games. Their recent form reads LDW. They have scored eight goals but conceded ten, giving them a minus two goal difference. The squad depth will be tested ahead of their next match, a home fixture against Leyton Orient on September 5th.
Following his signing, Holmes was immediately sent back to Reading on loan where he suffered an injury that limited his game time. After returning to Luton, he joined Belgian club FCV Dender in the January 2025 transfer window. He managed only two appearances there due to further fitness issues. His departure concludes a challenging two-and-a-half-year period with the Hatters.
Luton's start to the season has been mixed, leaving them six points behind early leaders Huddersfield Town. The team's defensive record, having let in ten goals, is an area for improvement as they prepare for the visit of sixth-placed Leyton Orient. The club now turns its attention to securing a positive result in their next home game at Kenilworth Road on September 5th.
