Luton Denies Rumours of Signing Lee Buchanan
Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere has firmly dismissed rumours linking his team with a potential transfer for Birmingham City full back Lee Buchanan. The 25-year-old, who recently suffered serious knee ligament damage and hasn't played competitively since December 2024, was reportedly being scouted by Luton assistant manager Chris Powell during pre-season games.
Wilshere stated: 'No, Chris Powell went to watch because he lives in Birmingham and he loves football, and Barcelona were playing there. Of course, if he sees someone that he likes, we talk about it, but there’s no truth in that.'
Despite the rumours, Luton Town has several squad number assignments still available for players over 21 years of age. With Lasse Nordas, Jerry Yates, Reuell Walters, and Thomas Holmes not assigned numbers yet, and defender Teden Mengi allowed to leave, there are five spots open for new signings.
Future Transfer Plans
Wilshere is optimistic about the future transfer market but insists on bringing in players who will improve the team. He explained: 'Yes, we’re working, like we have done all summer. We’ve done really well up until now, but I’ve said it before, we’re not just going to bring players in that won’t improve us straight away. I think we’ve done that really well, we identified at the end of the season what we think we need and I think the most important thing about that is really going into detail about it.
It’s not always a recruitment gap that you’re missing, it might be something from us as coaches, or something we see in the team that we need to improve, but there were some areas we thought we could improve and we’ve done that. We’re still working away and if the right thing comes up, we’ll definitely be ready for that.'
The manager also expressed interest in re-signing Manchester City attacker Emilio Lawrence on a season-long loan, stating: 'No, but I’ve spoken about it a lot so everyone knows where I stand with that. And yes, if there is something to update, you guys will be the first to know.'
