Luton Town Seek Carabao Cup Win Against Gillingham
Luton Town are looking to get their 2026/27 season off to a strong start as they face Gillingham in the Carabao Cup Round One. The Hatters have strengthened their squad with new signings, including George Johnston and Callum Marshall.
Contrasting Summer Rebuilds
Gillingham have released 14 players at the end of last season in hopes of finally challenging for promotion. 12 new faces have made the move to Kent so far, including former Motherwell and St Johnstone centre-back Liam Gordon and ex-Cardiff City winger Kadeem Harris. Luton Town, led by Jack Wilshere, have their eyes set on a return to the Championship. The Bedfordshire side have strengthened with the signings of Bolton's promotion-winning captain George Johnston and 21-year-old striker Callum Marshall from West Ham. Kasey Palmer also agreed permanent terms to return to the club after a successful loan spell.
Head-to-Head Record
The last meeting between the two clubs was in the same competition, as Premier League Luton hosted Gillingham in the 2023/24 season. The Hatters ran out 3-2 winners, avoiding a late scare from the Gills. Overall, Luton lead the head-to-head, with 31 wins to Gillingham's 18. A further 14 matches have ended as a stalemate.
Team News
Gillingham's men have struggled with injury throughout pre-season; however, Armani Little and Garath McCleary could push to make the matchday squad. Bradley Dack will not feature, alongside goalkeeper Lennon MacLorg. The fixture will also come too soon for midfielders Cameron Antwi and Ethan Coleman. If loanee shot stopper Ollie Wright isn't available to make his debut, the hosts are expected to sign a goalkeeper on an emergency loan agreement. New striker Callum Marshall could be in line to make his Luton debut after completing a move from Championship side West Ham United last week. Defenders Tom Holmes and Reuell Walters, alongside strikers Jerry Yates and Lasse Nordas, are expected to leave Kenilworth Road before the window closes and are not likely to feature against Gillingham.
Likely Lineups
Gillingham - Wright; Tabares, Smith, Gordon, Dobbs, Harris; Freeman, Albarus; Brophy; Hale, Goodwin. Luton - Shea; Jones, Odoffin, Johnston, Johnson; Clark, Walsh; Richards, Palmer, Kouda; Marshall.
Key Players
Gillingham - Ronan Hale. The Northern Irish international moved to Kent in January after an impressive stint at Ross County, netting 30 times in 67 games. It did not take the 27-year-old long to make an impression in England, scoring five goals across the second half of last season. Before his move to Scotland, Hale played for Larne and Cliftonville, becoming one of the most prolific strikers in the Northern Ireland Football League. He made his debut for his country in a 1-0 win over Iceland in 2025. Gillingham's goalscoring problems have been well documented, and they hope their big-money signing can be part of the solution this term.
Luton Town - Kasey Palmer. Attacking midfielder Kasey Palmer made his move to Kenilworth Road permanent this summer, having spent the second half of last campaign on loan from Hull City. The 29-year-old scored 10 goals in 20 appearances for the Hatters, and his return is a significant boost to the team's attacking options.
