Luton Town are on the verge of completing two pieces of summer transfer business, with head coach Jack Wilshere providing an update on what is going on behind the scenes at Kenilworth Road. The Hatters have added just one face to their squad so far in this window, with George Johnstone snapped up on a free transfer following his departure from Bolton Wanderers.
Wilshere said: “We’re close with one, close with two, then we’ve got a couple of scheduled meetings for next week, but this is always happening.”
The head coach added that Luton Town had ‘identified some targets’ that they hope can arrive well ahead of the start of the Championship season to get bedded into the squad.
Kasey Palmer is top of Town’s list, and could well be one of those two names finalised over the coming week. Luton Today touts that Hull City midfielder Kasey Palmer is ‘top of Town’s list’ and could well be one of those two names finalised over the coming week.
The 29-year-old impressed during his spell at Luton Town, making 20 League One appearances and chipping in with eight league goals from the midfield.
Wilshere has outlined his priority of signing players who are certain to fit into his squad, and given Palmer’s loan spell, he would certainly tick that box.
The player is unlikely to get a look in at the Tigers in the Premier League and a permanent move back to Kenilworth Road is in the offing.
Any incomings will have to be offset by outgoings for Luton Town, who currently have 24 senior outfield players, which is two over the allowed number that can be selected for use in League One.
Several of the Hatters stars who were allowed to leave on loan last term could be top of the list.
Christ Makosso, who finished the campaign at Oxford United, is said to be close to an exit for Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre.
Wilshere has been candid about the fact players will have to leave, but outlined that the imminent sales will not affect pre-season preparations.
Luton Town are currently 7th in League One, with 74 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WWWDW.
They have scored 68 goals and conceded 56 this season, with a goal difference of +12.
They are 29 points behind leaders Lincoln in the title race.
