Luton Town manager Jack has outlined his tactical plans and confirmed squad availability ahead of the upcoming League One fixture. The Hatters, currently sitting 7th in the table with 8 points from five games, are preparing for a busy period starting with a trip to 15th-placed Stevenage on September 10th.
Speaking to Geoff Doyle of BBC Three Counties Radio, the boss reflected on the unpredictable nature of the division. "Tomorrow you face Orient, who scored five the other night," Doyle noted. "Before that, they got done by three." This showed the manager's main point: the need for consistent performance. He stressed that hard work on the training ground is the only route to finding that reliability.
The manager confirmed the team will largely stick with the 4-3-3 shape that served them well towards the end of the previous campaign. He highlighted the importance of Jordan Clark in making that system function effectively in midfield. However, he emphasised that principles and adaptability matter more than a rigid structure. The shape can fluidly change to a five-man defence when required, particularly to counter opponents using wing-backs. "I think the players like it," he said. "I think there'll be some games where we go into a four and sometimes when we're in a four, and we ask one of the wingers to track back and defend, especially when we're playing against wing backs, so then we look like a five."
He also discussed the profiles of his full-backs, naming JJ, Ashby, Benny, Izzy Jones, and Donley as options, noting that Donley and Palmer are similar types who can play together. The flexibility extends further, with Kasey and Jamie having played in various positions before, and Dan Gore capable of operating higher up the pitch at times.
Several key squad updates were provided. Defender Kal Naismith, who missed the Chelsea game, was brought in for the Mansfield match and responded well after some criticism following the Reading fixture. The manager praised Naismith's leadership and described him as important for the group. In attack, he expressed confidence in having two strikers, Nahki and Callum, competing for the number nine shirt, acknowledging they have different strengths and areas to develop.
Regarding other squad members, Teden Mengi is back in training and is available for selection, though the manager acknowledged a move abroad could materialise if an offer comes. Reuell Walters is currently injured and needs to regain fitness before any move is considered. The manager also stated that young forward Christian Chigozie should go out on loan for experience, while Harry Fox needs playing time and will likely be assessed again in January.
Luton's start to the season has been mixed, with a record of two wins, two draws, and one loss. Their recent form reads DWLDW, and they have scored 11 goals while conceding the same number, leaving them with a zero goal difference. This places them four points behind early leaders Sheffield Wednesday. The manager pointed to the club's strong finish to the transfer window as a positive, and he believes the experience within the coaching staff, with knowledge of the league, is a significant asset.
Looking ahead, the immediate focus is on the next match in the fixtures. Luton Town travel to face Stevenage on September 10th, seeking to build on their current league standing of 7th.
