Luton Town have been linked with a move for Exeter City midfielder Reece Cole following the Grecians' relegation to League Two. The 28-year-old started in the Hayes & Yeading United youth system, moving to Brentford as a 14-year-old, part of the U15 team who won the 2012 Milk Cup, also featuring for the U18s, becoming an important part of the Development squad during his time in West London. Cole went on to sign a first professional deal in February 2016, making his senior debut for the Bees when coming off the bench in the 3-2 victory at Nottingham Forest in March 2017. He had loan spells at Newport County, Yeovil Town, Maidenhead and Macclesfield, also going north of the border to play for Partick Thistle until his release from Brentford in June 2020. Cole went on to agree a short term deal at QPR, but left without playing a game for the Loftus Road club, moving back to Scotland where he joined Dunfermline on a free transfer, featuring 12 times for the Scottish Championship outfit. Returning to England 12 months later, the midfielder dropped into non-league football, with stints at Chertsey Town and Hayes & Yeading once more, also working as a teacher, before making his way back to the professional game, going to Exeter City in July 2023, where his career really got back on track. Cole scored seven goals in 42 matches during his first campaign at St James Park, before an injury-hit second year saw him feature 27 times, on target three times. Last term, he managed 39 appearances, netting on seven occasions, including a thumping side-footed finish at Kenilworth Road in his side's 3-2 defeat, as he has played 108 games for City, scoring 17 goals and adding 11 assists. Football League World is now reporting that with the Devon club back in the fourth tier of English football, they could have to sell the midfielder, who has one year left on his contract, with the Hatters, Blackpool and Reading are all potentially interested in doing a deal for the playmaker. The two clubs have done plenty of business in the past, Town signing Jake Richards last term, and also bringing in Milli Alli the season beforehand, while during the 2023–2024 campaign, they also loaned Zimbabwe international Admiral Muskwe to the Grecians, who played six times for the club.
