Luton Town teenager Harry Fox has made a significant early-season impression on manager Jack Wilshere, who says the 18-year-old is now close to regular first-team football. The academy graduate, who joined the club at age nine, has quickly adapted to senior level after a summer of progression that included a pre-season tour to Spain and a debut at Stamford Bridge.
Wilshere's comments come as the Hatters sit seventh in League One with eight points from five games. Their next challenge is an away trip to face Stevenage on Thursday, September 10th. The team has scored 11 goals and conceded 11 so far this campaign, leaving them four points behind early leaders Sheffield Wednesday.
Fox's journey to the senior squad accelerated this summer. He impressed during several pre-season friendlies after traveling with the squad to Spain. His official senior debut came in the Vertu Trophy against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s and Exeter City. He then started a knockout contest against Swindon Town in the same competition.
The left-back, who can also operate in midfield, earned a place on the bench for the Carabao Cup second round match against Chelsea. He came on for the final half hour of that match at Stamford Bridge, experiencing what Wilshere called a "really big stadium" for the first time. His League One debut followed in the 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient on Saturday, where he was introduced after 21 minutes to replace the injured Harrison Ashby.
"I think Foxy took everyone a little bit by surprise, especially when he first came in and started training with us," Wilshere stated. The manager highlighted the teenager's versatility and temperament. "He can play left back, he can play in midfield, he showed today he can play wingback," Wilshere added, referencing Fox's shift to the left wingback slot against Orient after Ashby's injury forced Izzy Jones to the right flank.
Wilshere praised Fox for bringing "calm and control to the team" in an "environment he’s never faced" before. The manager noted the player possesses "a lot of attributes that we like as a club" and described him as a "top kid" with humility. Fox's rapid development has altered the club's immediate plans for him.
Fox was considered for a loan move before the transfer window closed, but his performances have changed that strategy. He is now expected to remain with the first-team squad until at least the January transfer window. "I think that will probably be the case until January and then we reassess," Wilshere confirmed.
The manager believes Fox "is really close" to playing regularly but acknowledged the balance required for a young player's development. "He does need to play," Wilshere said, while also stating the teenager "is developing really nicely" and "has the temperament, the confidence to step in and play at this level."
In his first three first-team appearances, Fox has been selected as a left back but has actually played as a midfielder. His ability to cover multiple positions provides valuable depth for Wilshere as he manages a squad competing on multiple fronts. Fans can track the full squad's availability on the club's injuries page.
With Luton Town aiming to close the four-point gap to the top of League One, integrating promising academy products like Fox could prove important. The team's current form reads DWLDW, and their next match against 16th-placed Stevenage offers a chance to build momentum. Supporters can follow the team's progress in the standings throughout the season. Fox's continued involvement will be one to watch as the Hatters prepare for their fixture on September 10th.
