Luton Town have loaned young defender Christian Chigozie to Hemel Hempstead Town on a short-term deal until the end of December. The move is designed to give the 18-year-old regular men's football in the National League South.

Hemel Hempstead announced the signing, stating their delight at bringing in the centre-back from the local League One club. Chigozie, who stands at 6'1", is known for his physical presence and has been with Luton since he was an under-7.

Chigozie's path to the first team

He made his senior debut last season in a Carabao Cup tie against Coventry and has been a regular in Alex Lawless's under-21 side this campaign. Chigozie captained the under-18s to an EFL Youth Alliance League and PDL Cup double in the 2024-25 season and signed a new contract with the Hatters in May.

Manager Jack Wilshere explained the reasoning behind the loan. “I want him to play games, I want him to experience men’s football consistently where he’s just got to defend, got to head everything,” Wilshere said. “He’s someone with a lot of potential, a lot of good attributes, he needs to go out and play some games.”

The loan comes as Luton Town manage their squad while handling a challenging start to the League One season, currently sitting 16th in the standings with eight points from seven games. Their recent form includes a 2-1 defeat to Bradford City, a match where Wilshere rotated his goalkeepers by starting James Shea over Josh Keeley. Shea also started in the midweek EFL Trophy, keeping a clean sheet in a morale-boosting 6-0 victory over Ipswich Town Under-21s. The club will be looking to build on that result in their upcoming fixtures.

Hemel Hempstead, who sit 16th in the National League South with ten points from nine games, travel to face Slough Town tomorrow. Christian Chigozie is expected to be available for selection for that match as he begins his loan spell. The defender's progress will be tracked in our comprehensive player stats section.
